The Lightning Brigade is an all arms organization that was formed in 2008 from infantry,
cavalry, and artillery units throughout the southeast from the States of Alabama, Georgia,
Florida and Tennessee.  The Lightning Brigade was the 4th Battalion of the Division Cavalry
Brigade until our organization was awarded Brigade status by the First Federal Executive
Committee in January 2009.

Our name "The Lightning Brigade" was inspired by the original unit, that is, Wilder's Indiana
Lightning Brigade which served with honor and distinction during the breakout at Hoover's
Gap near Wartrace, Tennessee, the battle of Chickamauga, the fighting around Chattanooga,
throughout the Atlanta campaign, and on to Wilson's Alabama raid resulting in General
Bedford Forrest's surrender at Gainesville, Alabama.

The Lightning Brigade mirrors the original unit by portraying mounted infantry, dismounted
infantry and horse drawn artillery. Also in January 2009, the Lightning Brigade grew to over
500 active members when the Alabama Division of Re-enactors joined and formed the
Brigade's second battalion.  Although many units in the Lightning Brigade portray only federal
units, the Brigade is unique in the First Federal Division because some of our units also
portray confederates when it is necessary to keep the sides historically balanced.
